Hirsch Reserve Small Batch Selected Straight Bourbon Whiskey
First Look: “Medium gold/amber in color.”
Nose: “Cereal grain, vanilla, oak, honey, a touch of varnish, and sweet corn.”
Cereal grain and honey pop from the glass with light vanilla undertones. The sweet corn melds with the oak and a touch of varnish finishes of the well-layered nose.
Palate: “Cinnamon, caramel, oak, vanilla, a touch of citrus, and bite of varnish.”
A light creamy entry leads to a blast of cinnamon and varnish tingling the outer palate. The caramel and oak layer the mid palate as vanilla and citrus round out the palate.
Finish: The finish is long and uninteresting.
Fair Trade: $40
Verdict: Don’t let the fancy bottle fool you. The Hirsch Reserve Small Batch Selected is a bit of a letdown, even at $35. There are plenty of other whiskies/whiskeys in the same price range which I’d much rather spend my money purchasing.
