This Rittenhouse Bottled-In-Bond 100 proof is quite complex but can at times be a bit one noted with cinnamon and heat.
First Look: “Dark amber in color with a slight clear hue.”
Nose: “Cinnamon, caramel, dried currant, cherry, toffee, varnish, and sweet oak.”
Cinnamon and caramel notes soar from the glass while layers of dried currant and cherry tickle the nose. After a few minutes, toffee and a touch of varnish become present as sweet oak rounds out the well-layered nose.
Palate: “Toffee, vanilla, cinnamon, candy corn, soft oak, sweet raisins, and spicy cocoa.”
The entry is bold and spicy showcasing cinnamon and toffee. Spicy cocoa, soft oak, and candy corn coat the mid-palate. After the heat backs off, sweet raisins and vanilla strike to complete this spicy and rich palate.
Finish: The finish is long, spicy and complex.
Fair Trade: $25
Verdict: I found this whiskey slightly overbearing on its own, but in a Manhattan… WOW! It's a home run!
Rittenhouse did a great job on this bottling and WI will definitely always keep it handy for cocktail hour.
